Brothers of the Flame>Info>Poi>
Poi today is a food product made from wrapping
the root of the taro plant in a ball with leaves and attaching it to a rope to
the poi so you can swing it fast and repeatedly thrashing it against something
to eventually make a soft, easily-eaten food call poi. It is believed that this
food has its origin in Polynesia and it is likely that the Maori people of New
Zealand would thrash two such poi balls of leaves and root at the same time
because one tends to build muscles in this way; and you would want them to
build symmetrically. Since it does build strength and flexibility poi was used
to enhance co-ordination, strength, flexibility, and dexterity in warriors, who
often used rocks instead of poi wrapped in leaves. Poi is the Maori word for
ball and largely considered the origin for the word for swinging poi balls on a
rope or string.
The practice of spinning poi dates back to over
1000 years ago in New Zealand and was also used by the Maori women to keep
their hands and arms flexible for weaving as well. This activity became a form
of dance that has been performed as part of their ritual ceremonies. It was
even used as a calming agent to put children to sleep much like a mobile is
used today.
Poi has evolved in many cultures as exercise and
fighting technique. The Brothers of the Flame use it to entertain crowds with
their artful mastery of the sport with a twist – their poi balls are set on
fire. Set to music fire poi is a wonderfully thrilling experience that is
mesmerizing and entertaining. Poi is a common addition to luaus and as of late
to DJ Showcases and large parties. The Brothers of the Flame are often booked
to perform fire poi in night clubs as well.
Fire Poi is entertaining but it is also
dangerous. Without good skills and safety support under no circumstances should
fire poi be attempted. Fire poi should also not be attempted alone regardless
of your skill level. As with all things that involve fuel and fire, great care
is used in fire poi performances and all safeties are in place.
