      The art of Poi - the traditional Polynesian act of twirling and swinging fire sticks - tends to be so addictive that its practitioners don't know when to stop. Whether they are swinging grocery bags around the house or absent-mindedly spinning Poi sticks while watching television, the dexterity discipline insidiously takes over their lives.

The San Antonio Express News photojournalist Kevin Geil interviewed three of the Brothers of the Flame
      The ancient art of Poi is alive and well in San Antonio thanks to a six-man group called The Brothers of the Flame.
      It was formed by Manny Castillo, 27, and Gabriel Alejo, 22 in late 2000.
      Castillo and Alejo said they became self-taught practitioners after seeing a performance.
      “We started out in clubs but took it beyond that” Castillo said.
