      Brothers of the Flame take a Polynesian
fire-spinning tradition into local goth and rave culture
      One of the first things you learn about fire spinners
is that their wrists are rarely at rest.
      The art of Poi - the traditional Polynesian act of
twirling and swinging fire sticks - tends to be so addictive that its
practitioners don't know when to stop. Whether they are swinging grocery bags
around the house or absent-mindedly spinning Poi sticks while watching
television, the dexterity discipline insidiously takes over their lives.

      The ancient art of Poi is alive and well in
San Antonio thanks to a six-man group called The Brothers of the Flame.
      It was formed by Manny Castillo, 27, and Gabriel
Alejo, 22 in late 2000.
      Castillo and Alejo said they became self-taught
practitioners after seeing a performance.
      “We started out in clubs but took it beyond that”
Castillo said.
